Naslov/Title The world’s greatest sound archive. 78 rpm records as a source for musicological research/Največji zvočni arhiv na svetu.
Avtor/Author Pekka Gronow
Abstract
During the era of 78 rpm shellac records, circa 1900 to 1955, at least half a million different records were produced in most countries of the world. This paper discusses the growth of the industry, the selection of artists and repertoire, the archiving of historical recordings, and their significance for musicological research. Many recordings are probably permanently lost and surviving examples are scattered across many private and public archives, but online catalogues will hopefully make this material more accessible in the future.
