Abstract

In 1904 the project Austrian Folk Songs was set up, which aimed to collect folk music from all parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The reasons for this project were not only folkloristic, but also socio-political. The intention was to raise greater mutual understanding within the empire and promote a supranational consciousness. Similar efforts are now being made. The Styrian Folk Song Society, along with other societies, has been conducting field research in the border area between Styria and Slovenia. The wealth of material that has been documented there is surprising. It can be hoped that folk music may also make a contribution to greater tolerance between nations in an enlarged European Union.
